Cyclobutanemethanol acts as a hydroxyl group, is joined to one of the cyclobutane ring's carbons to form the molecule. At room temperature, this is a colourless liquid with a boiling point of 144 145 C. It is soluble in most organic solvents, including ethanol, acetone, and diethyl ether, but is only weakly so in water. Cyclobutanemethanol is a starting point for the synthesis of many different compounds, including pharmaceuticals, flavours, and fragrances. Due to the molecule's asymmetric carbon, it can also be utilised as a chiral building block in organic synthesis.
